Wellbeing Series — Intro to Chair Yoga

Yoga is a union of the mind, body, and spirit. Participants of this workshop will engage with three limbs of yoga: asana (movement), pranayama (breath work), and dhyana (meditation) using the support of a chair. We'll engage in accessible forms of each of these limbs throughout our session, gently stretching the body through movement, controlling the breath, and focusing the mind to feel moments of presence and ease. The session will begin with a community check in, where the facilitator will inquire about folks' physical and mental needs of the day and adjust the sequence accordingly. Incorporating the chair allows participants to embrace another level of accessibility in the practice, as it eliminates any need to get close to the ground and allows us to realize we are capable of incorporating short, regulating practices from a seated posture that we access in our day to day lives. All you will need is a chair, or elevated and stable seat, where knees can be bent with feet close to the ground. Facilitation is trauma informed and catered towards all levels of experience with yoga.

Sabrina Racquel (she/they) is a community educator and lifelong learner dedicated to healing as social justice. Sabrina developed their yoga practice searching for an embodied approach to healing from complex trauma and relief from an auto-inflammatory disorder. Throughout their former career as a survivor’s advocate and crisis counselor, they became curious about providing folks with healing education outside the medical industrial complex. They received their 200 Hour YTT at The Tree Yoga Cooperative, where they currently serve as Studio Manager, and went on to complete an additional certification in Trauma Informed Yoga for Survivors of Sexual Assault.

Sabrina’s intention as a yoga teacher is to provide marginalized and overworked populations with tools to reconnect to themselves and regulate their nervous systems, in community. Sabrina is most passionate about teaching restorative, yin, hatha yoga, y yoga en español throughout South Central and South East Los Angeles. They remind students your value is not dependent upon the ability to perform or serve. You deserve to be!

SJPLA’s Wellbeing Series is a free workshop every second Thursday of the month at 11 am. The workshops introduce a variety of healing modalities as part of our Racial Equity in Homelessness Initiative. These sessions promote personal rest, renewal, and connection creating space for discussion on how to sustain wellbeing practices.
