Story of Us LA: exploring the healing power of stories
We are living in a moment that asks something of us.
Across Los Angeles, we see the impact of inequity and the weight of systems designed to serve only a select few. At the same time, there is a growing recognition that quick fixes and surface-level solutions won’t carry us forward. What’s needed now is something more grounded, rooted in our relationships with one another, shaped by lived experience, and driven by people closest to the work.
At Social Justice Partners Los Angeles (SJPLA), meeting this moment means investing in leaders who are already building tangible solutions across our city. Through our Systems Change Fellowship and upcoming Story of Us LA event, we support systems-impacted nonprofit leaders who are not only reimagining systems, but actively transforming them. Just as importantly, we create space for those leaders to share their stories and our greater community to take part in what comes next.
Story of Us LA is where Los Angeles comes together to recognize our collective power and move toward a more just and liberated future for everyone.
Storytelling as a Source of Healing
Storytelling is a practice of reflection, meaning-making, and restoration.
It is a way for us to process lived experiences shaped by injustice and resilience. Our intention in the Systems Change Fellowship is to create space for leaders to have that space for reflection and to move at their own pace in a world that often demands urgency above all else.
This is what it looks like to invest in people and their visions.
Storytelling as Power
Stories have always been a force for change. They challenge dominant narratives. They make visible what has been ignored or erased. They invite us to see one another more fully and to imagine what is still possible.
When Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie delivered her influential TED talk, The Danger of a Single Story, she named how dominant narratives flatten entire communities and in doing so, sparked a global conversation about representation and whose voices are heard.
The leaders in our community sharing their impactful stories are doing critical work across Los Angeles and beyond — advancing justice in education, reimagining systems of care, advocating for equity, and building pathways toward collective wellbeing.
Their stories are critical to this work. They deepen it, strengthen it, and expand its reach.
Storytelling as Collective Practice
Transformation doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in rooms where people are willing to listen, to witness, to learn, and to be changed.
Story of Us LA creates that kind of space. A space to connect with others who believe in a more just and connected Los Angeles. A space to build relationships rooted in shared values and collective care. A space to remember that we are not doing this work alone.
In a time when disconnection can feel constant, gathering in this way is powerful. It reconnects us to each other — and to what’s possible when we move together.
Building What Comes Next
The 11 fellows in this year’s cohort have already been laying the groundwork and actively shaping the future of Los Angeles.
They are educators, advocates, and visionaries working across systems, bringing bold ideas into practice and creating real pathways toward change. Their work reflects both urgency and intention, grounded in the needs of their communities and fueled by a commitment to liberation.
When you join us at Story of Us LA, you’re not simply witnessing this work, you’re becoming part of it. Your presence strengthens a network of people committed to building something better, together.
The Story of Us: A Place to Land and a Way to Move Forward
Spaces that center care, connection, and purpose have always mattered deeply, but we are seeing the need for community more and more every day. Story of Us LA is one of those spaces. It’s where our community comes together to listen, to engage authentically, and to imagine what a more just Los Angeles can look like and how we get there. It’s a place of momentum. It’s where ideas turn into action and connection leads to collective commitment.
